Join the Fun!

Every summer, the streets close to motor vehicle traffic in favour of Open Air, one of our most anticipated events. This is when residents gather together to enjoy fabulous food and entertainment that includes an air show and fireworks. As a retiree, you get all of this and much more, without the elbow-to-elbow crowds and jam-packed traffic bigger cities are known for. If you ever want to get into Toronto, it’s only about an hour commute, give or take, depending on how busy the highways are. Alternatively, you can hop on the GO at either Allendale or Barrie South, allowing you to skip driving altogether.

The Glory of the Great Outdoors

If there’s one thing many retirees are looking forward to, it’s spending time immersed in the wonders of nature. That could mean long walks along the water, slow strolls through public gardens, or adventurous hikes on challenging trails that leave your younger peers struggling to keep up with you.

In any case, Barrie offers a vast world of outdoor beauty, so much so that you might soon refer to our little slice of paradise as “Barrie-dise.”

Minet’s Point Park is just one example of our many breathtaking waterfront areas. Here, you can relax with a picnic lunch or sit by the beach under an umbrella. There are also hiking trails to enjoy, and if you’re feeling ambitious, you can try your hand at windsurfing out on the waves.

For some truly stunning views, head out over to Nelson Lookout. You can see for miles over Kempenfelt Bay from this vantage point. Paved stairs through a wooded area lead from the lookout at Codrington Street to Blake Street. From here, you can get to the waterfront trail in less than 5 minutes. This breathtaking landmark is a must-visit any time of year, not just in the warmer weather, but also when the entire city is gleaming with snow.

Speaking of winter, Barrie is essentially the snow-belt of Ontario, and you know what that means! It’s time for skiing, cross-country, downhill, or both, as well as snowshoeing or even just bundling up and enjoying the sights of the frozen wonderland. In Barrie, you get all four seasons, and every day brings a new memory to enjoy, as well as an unforgettable photo opportunity.
